To appreciate our firm and its dynamic, one has to look back to 1984 when Mike McCadden and Ted Carpenter started working together at a small defense firm in Media, PA. Ted was a senior associate and Mike was a law clerk. Mike and Ted shared a conference room table and one phone in the basement with another associate – and that is where the bond began. In addition to handling liability cases, Ted also handled the workers’ compensation caseload for that firm and wrote opinions for the Appeal Board. In 1986, Ted left to join a large defense firm and to Mike’s chagrin, he inherited Ted’s workers’ comp files. About a year later, Ted recruited Mike to join him at the new firm. By this time, Mike was deeply entrenched in the world of workers’ compensation and has never looked back. The two worked together in worker’s compensation defense for another 15 years. Ted was a senior trial attorney in that firm’s workers’ compensation department and Mike became department chair, overseeing a multi-state workers’ compensation department.
In 1996, Lisa Lane joined that firm’s Pittsburgh office and quickly caught the attention of management. Recognizing the importance of client education, she began to organize seminars and lunch and learn programs, increasing case referrals to western Pennsylvania. Lisa eventually supervised the firm’s workers’ compensation attorneys for all of Western Pennsylvania.
Ted, Mike and Lisa became close friends who appreciated each others’ various strengths and differences. They decided to pool their strengths and start Carpenter, McCadden & Lane, LLP. To this day, they credit each other with the idea to start the firm, saying that “I was presented with an opportunity I could not refuse.” The firm opened its doors on April 8, 2002 and enjoys a Martindale Hubbell AV rating.
CML has now grown to over twenty attorneys who handle workers’ compensation defense cases exclusively throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and West Virginia. CML’s philosophy is to aggressively defend its clients with an eye toward prompt case closure with the best economic outcome for the client. The firm stresses communication and teamwork with its clients to obtain successful results. The attorneys are also frequent lecturers and are available for in-house educational programs.
